Our History

The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the classical Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. The doctrine that distinguishes the Church of the Nazarene and other Wesleyan denominations from most other Christian denominations is that of entire sanctification. Nazarenes believe that God calls Christians to a life of holy living that is marked by an act of God, cleansing the heart from original sin and filling the individual with love for God and humankind.

Nazarene interest in Jamaica began as early as the 1930’s when General Superintendent Rev. Dr. J. W. Goodwin visited the island. In 1955 Mrs. A. O. Hendricks visited Jamaica and through her effort the Shower of Blessing programme began to aired on September 12, 1956. Through the assistance of Mrs. Lillie Mae Burke with whom Mrs. Hendricks was associated when she visited late 1955; the Church of the Nazarene was officially registered as a denomination in Jamaica on time for the crusade.

August 26-28,1966  the Nazarene Evangelistic Ambassadors, a group of college and seminary men from the United States of America (U. S. A.) along with their evangelists held a crusade at the National Area in Kingston.  Day time visits were scheduled for schools, radio stations and civic groups. October 6, 1968  the Boulevard Church was organized following a tent crusade by a team of Student Mission Corps.

This experience is marked by entire consecration of the believer to do God's will and is followed by a life of seeking to serve God through service to others. Like salvation, entire sanctification is an act of God's grace, not of works. Our pursuant service to God is an act of love whereby we show our appreciation for the grace that has been extended to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
